Tom Wolfe, Star Journalist and Author of 'The Right Stuff,' Dies at 87
Nesbit said Wolfe died after he was hospitalized with an infection. The novel featured Wolfe himself as a subjective participant and is celebrated as one of the seminal examples of what came to be known as New Journalism.
In addition to his writings, Wolfe was also known for his foppish style and signature white suit, though in older age he swapped out tall collars for polo shirts. In a statement given to the Wall Street Journal, Wolfe's agent Lynn Nesbit said, "He is not just an American icon, but he had a huge global literary reputation".
Colter joined amNewYork as associate editor in 2017, and has worked as a news editor and designer in New York City since 2011.
The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (1968) chronicled the rise of the hippy generation, while Radical Chic (1970) mocked the pretensions of Manhattan liberals and The Painted Word (1975) those of the art world.
Wolfe, the grandson of a Confederate rifleman, began his journalism career as a reporter at the Springfield (Mass.) Union in 1957.
His first book, a collection of articles about the flamboyant Sixties, was published in 1965 as "The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby". Along with Gay Talese, Truman Capote and Nora Ephron, he helped demonstrate that journalism could offer the kinds of literary pleasure found in books. And one of his best-regarded books, "The Right Stuff", which was later made into a movie, showcased the heroism of the first American astronauts.
Wolfe revealed in a 2016 interview with The Telegraph of London that he wrote the vivid account of tripping on acid without ever dropping a tab. Since childhood, Tom Wolfe dreamed of becoming a writer.
Tom Wolfe brought stories to life with groundbreaking novels, including "Bonfire of the Vanities" and "The Right Stuff".
Wolfe is survived by his wife, Sheila, and his children, Alexandra and Tommy.
