'I'm sure we'd all like to join in remembering Dame Tessa Jowell, the former culture secretary, ' Sue began.

Ms. Jowell was diagnosed with a brain tumor previous year.

The dedicated former minister has been particularly praised for her success in bringing the Olympics to London and her campaigning on cancer research.

In her powerful and moving speech in the House of Lords, she also backed our campaign for 5-ALA - the so-called "pink drink", which causes brain tumour cells to glow in the dark and therefore makes them more easily visible to surgeons operating to remove them - to be made available across the United Kingdom to any patient who would benefit from its use.

She told peers: "In the end, what gives a life meaning is not only how it is lived, but how it draws to a close".

During a speech to the House of Lords in January, Jowell said: "I hope that this debate will give hope to other cancer patients, like me, so we can live well together with cancer, not just dying of it".

She died peacefully at the family home near Shipston-on-Stour in Warwickshire shortly after 22:00 BST on Saturday, the statement said.
