WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum quits over privacy disagreements with Facebook

WhatsApp founder plans to leave after broad clashes with parent Facebook

WhatsApp's Chief Executive Officer, Jan Koum announced in a Facebook post that he's leaving the company; however, his exit could cost him as much as $1 billion.

This comes at a time where Facebook has been scrutinised for overstepping users privacy in the Cambridge Analytica saga.

Mark Zuckerberg's recently said on the F8 keynote speech that Jan Koum was a "tireless advocate for privacy and encryption" and thanked him for helping turn Facebook into the "largest fully encrypted communication network in the world".

"I'm grateful for everything you've done to help connect the world, and for everything you've taught me, including about encryption and its ability to take power from centralized systems and put it back in people's hands", Zuckerberg wrote.

According to reports, Koum reportedly clashed with the parent company, Facebook's attempts to use WhatsApp's personal data and weaken its encryption, the Washington Post earlier reported, citing people familiar with the internal information.

"It's been nearly a decade since Brian and I started WhatsApp, and it's been an fantastic journey with some of the best people".

WhatsApp's management has fiercely opposed advertising, saying in 2012 they did not want to be "just another ad clearinghouse" where the engineering team "spends their day tuning data mining". At that time Koum said that the purchase would not change anything for the users of the messaging service. "Those values will always be at the heart of WhatsApp". In attendance will be more than 5,000 app software developers, some of whom may be WhatsApp users.

Its business model is based on getting more people hooked on the service and allowing advertisers to promote their products to those users. Given that WhatsApp messages are fully encrypted and the users' data is safe, it is something that doesn't work for the parent company Facebook.

Koum confirmed his departure from WhatsApp Monday on his Facebook page.

Brian Acton, the other Co-founder of WhatsApp, had left in November previous year and openly supported the #DeleteFacebook movement too.
