China: PM Modi, Xi Jinping agree to improve trust and communication between their militaries

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shake hands as they visit the Hubei Provincial Museum in Wuhan Hubei province China

WUHAN: China and India has reached an understanding during the two-day informal Wuhan summit to launch a joint economic project in Afghanistan, Indian media reported.

Last year, Indian and Chinese troops faced off on the Doklam plateau, an area high in the Himalayas claimed both by China and by India's ally Bhutan.

Modi and Xi agreed their countries should strengthen existing diplomatic mechanisms and improve lines of communication between the two militaries to ensure peace and tranquility along the lengthy border, Gokhale said.

Gokhale said the two leaders reviewed developments in India-China relations from the strategic and long-term perspective and chose to implement various confidence-building measures which had already been agreed upon by the two sides.

The BJP leader said the process of addressing the bilateral concerns was on and that the just-concluded informal meeting between the two leaders would be of much help.

"President Xi said that he had seen a number of Indian films, both Bollywood and regional, and that it would be a good idea that more Indian films come to China and more Chinese films go to India", Gokhale said.

India and China seem to have dusted off an old proposal for a joint economic project in war-torn Afghanistan, showcasing their ability to cooperate at a time the U.S. is trying to prop up New Delhi as a counterweight to Beijing in the Indo-Pacific. "The two leaders agreed that India and China are major powers and will pursue peaceful, balanced relations which will be important among current global uncertainty", Gokhale told reporters.

Europe will get to see the OnePlus 6 before China and India
Separately, OnePlus is set to unveil the OnePlus 6 at an event in London on May 16, a day ahead of its launch in China and India. That fits in with several rumours we'd seen suggesting the OnePlus 6 would launch earlier in the year than the OnePlus 5 .

"The two leaders underlined trade should be balanced and sustainable and we should take advantage of the complementarities between the two economies to enhance our trade and investment".

He also said both the leaders recognized the common threat posed by terrorism and reiterated their strong condemnation of and resolute opposition to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Several newspapers carried large photographs and articles on the summit, some placing news of the meetings ahead of the historic meeting between North Korea's Kim Jong Un and the South Korean President Moon Jae-in in the demilitarised zone (DMZ) between the two countries.

Modi and Xi had six rounds of talks in the two-day summit where they discussed a wide range of issues.

"It is quite clear that strategic agreement between the two countries far exceeds the specific differences, and the need for cooperation far exceeds local friction", it said.

This was followed by a private lunch hosted by President Xi in honour of Prime Minister Modi. India should let China believe that it will never take part in an Asian version of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation or the Indo-Pacific strategy aimed at opposing China.

The minister said that Mr. Xi emphasised that the problems between China and India were "temporary" but the cooperation would be "everlasting". One can only find an opinion article written by Chinese Ambassador to India Luo Zhaohui in Hindustan Times titled 'India-China cooperation outweighs our differences " hanging at the end of the site's home page.
