Russia threatens to block Facebook
Blocking the IP addresses has prevented Russian internet users from accessing Telegram and other services that route content through Google and Amazon servers.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov said that although Russian Federation accounts for just around 7 percent of the messenger's 200 million users, it will do everything in its power to bypass the blockade. The authorities also blocked a significant number of Amazon and Google IP addresses, claiming that Telegram was using them in an attempt to get round the ban.
The block reportedly comes as a result of the Russian group Roskomnadzor's attempts to block Internet users from using Telegram, an encrypted messaging service.
Roskomnadzor started implementing the court's decision on Monday by ordering internet service providers to block Telegram.
In a statement on Monday, Telegram founder Pavel Durov said the block was unconstitutional, as it infringed Russians' right to privacy of correspondence, and vowed to help users continue using the service.
Any moves by Google or Amazon to halt Telegram's access to their platforms or to remove its app from their stores would mean "they are witting collaborators in a censorship campaign, not victims of it", Snowden said. The most widely cited tool appears to be the use of so-called VPN anonymizers, which disguise an internet user's location and allow residents of Russian Federation to access the internet as though they were overseas.
"I have criticized Telegram's security model in the past, but Durov's response to the Russian government's totalitarian demand for backdoor access to private communications-refusal and resistance-is the only moral response, and shows real leadership", Snowden wrote on Twitter.
The head of Russia's online retail association, Alexander Ivanov, told the Vedomosti newspaper that it had received complaints from nine online shops about the blocking.
