Binghamton University student killed in campus stabbing

Stabbing on BU's Campus, Suspect At Large

Investigators from university and the state police interviewed people overnight. Police say the suspect, a student at the school, has been arrested.

As he walked outside the Couper Administration Building Monday morning, 21-year-old Conrad Taylor, a December 2017 graduate of BU who also serves on Binghamton City Council, described this tragedy is heartbreaking - a disgusting crime. He's described as a "light-skinned male wearing dark trousers and dark hoodie".

Timothy Faughnan, the university's police leader, claimed at a news conference Monday afternoon that emergency reviewers had discovered Mr. Souza "seriously injured by what appeared to function as stab wounds out of a knife" and taken him to the hospital, where he had been pronounced dead.

Classes were canceled on Monday as state and campus police spent the day searching the campus for evidence and the suspect.

According to BU officials, Souza is an global student from Brazil, but the New York Post reports that Souza graduated from high school previous year in the Westchester County Village of Rye Brook. This had been the second killing of students there in five weeks, grieving and departing the campus tense.

"We want to make sure that everyone is reassured that the campus is safe and that there is no threat to the campus", Faughnan said. Souza had previously attended high school in NY and was a native of Brazil, where family was notified, according to the university. On March 9, the body of Binghamton nursing student Haley Anderson, of Westbury, Long Island, was found in the off-campus apartment of a fellow student she had briefly dated.

The school is offering counseling services for students, faculty and staff.

A New Jersey native & Rutgers University graduate who firmly believes it's better to be lucky than good.
