Death toll rises in Gaza border protests

09 April 2018, 12:33 | Katrina Lee

"Following the earlier report regarding the suspects who infiltrated [into] Israel through the security fence near the Northern Gaza Strip, IDF troops located two explosive devices placed by the terrorists at the scene", an Israel Defense Forces statement said.

On Friday, tens of thousands of Palestinians gathered along the security fence, burning tires and throwing firebombs and rocks at Israeli soldiers, who responded with tear gas and live fire, the army and witnesses said, as Palestinians held a second "March of Return" protest.

The Committee to Protect Journalists put out an advisory to reporters covering Friday's protests, after 10 Palestinian journalists were injured during protests on 30 March.

Drawing worldwide criticism for its use of live fire, Israel said it is doing what is necessary to stop violent protesters from damaging or breaching its fence with the blockaded enclave.

Ramallah, Apr. 8 (BNA): Palestine News and Information Agency (WAFA) said it has documented 28 violations by Israeli occupation forces against journalists working in the occupied Palestinian territories during March.

It said Israel fired nine artillery shells into lands owned by citizens in Hajr al-Deek in the central Gaza Strip.

Dreamers respond to President Trump's DACA Tweets
On Monday, Trump again referred to "large caravans of people" and repeated his calls for Mexico to enforce border security laws. Such proposals are likely to face opposition from moderate Republicans and Democrats going into the midterm elections.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the slain Palestinians as Osama Khamis, 38, Majdi Shabat, Hussein Mohammed Madi, 16, Subhi Abu Atawi, 20, Muhammad Said al-Haj, 33, Sodki Faraj Abu Atawi, 45, and Alaa Adin Azamli, 17, bringing the death toll to 29 protesters since the "Great March of Return" began.

Unemployment stands at 50 percent and there are recurrent shortages of power and medical supplies.

Reporters Without Borders on Saturday accused the Israeli army of the "deliberate shooting" of journalists in Gaza after a week of bloodshed by the border.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights stated its "grave concern" for further violence ahead of Friday's demonstrations. IDF snipers killed 18 Arabs who were spotted trying to breach the fence and infiltrate Israel.

Having failed to condemn Israel's premeditated slaughter last week, the European Union put out a statement Thursday night urging Palestinians to "avoid any incitement to violence" and to "remain strictly nonviolent", even though not a single Israeli has been reported injured as a result of the protests.

In the West Bank political capital of Ramallah, around 50 Palestinian journalists held a vigil for Murtaja.
