Receiver Brandin Cooks was traded from the Patriots to the Rams the second straight offseason in which he has been traded

With Brady entering the winter of his career, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Patriots sign a quarterback who they believe can be Brady's heir. This time he will become a member of the revamped Los Angeles Rams.

In his first and only season with New England, Cooks totaled 65 receptions, 1,082 receiving yards, and seven receiving touchdowns.

New England will still have plenty of wide receivers to begin the year, even though slot man Danny Amendola has also moved on. The 34th overall selection came in the trade in which quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was sent to the San Francisco 49ers past year.

Cooks was in the final year of his contract and was due $8.5 million this season. Coutee met with the Patriots - who've employed two notable Texas Tech slot receivers in the past - at the combine.

Snead has now given up his first- and second-round picks in this draft to get Cooks and one year of Sammy Watkins. They got a great deal to snag the 23rd overall pick, and Cooks will also have a big opportunity in front of him as the Rams' likely No. 1 receiver. It also means the Rams won't continue talks about acquiring Odell Beckham Jr. from the Giants. After improving their defense all season long, they would go after Brandin Cooks.

Strong debut for Chinese oil futures
At 9:24 a.m. (0224 GMT) prices were up 3.29 per cent at 430 yuan, with 19,122 lots, equal to 19.1 million barrels of oil, traded. Brent for May settlement rose to $70.97 a barrel on the London-based ICE Futures Europe exchange.

Cooks, 24, is represented by Ryan Tollner of Rep1 Sports, the same agent as the Rams' franchise quarterback, Jared Goff.

- The Patriots did try to re-sign Cooks.

With Cooks now out of the picture the Patriots wide receiver depth chart now includes Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Malcolm Mitchell, Kenny Britt, Cordarrelle Patterson, Phillip Dorsett, Matthew Slater, Cody Hollister, and Riley McCarron. "Rams like this situation better", wrote Schefter on Twitter. They were listening to offers, but the asking price of two first-round picks may have just been too high for the Rams.

If the Pats want to replace Cooks with a rookie, Alabama's Calvin Ridley, SMU's Courtland Sutton, Texas A&M's Christian Kirk, LSU's D.J. Chark and Maryland's D.J. Moore are among the top options.

The Patriots now own two first-round picks (theirs and the Rams'), two second-round picks (theirs and the San Francisco 49ers'), and a third-round pick. For a man who loves to manipulate the draft by moving up, down, and adding picks for future drafts, this gives him options aplenty at the end of the month.
