The cordon and search operations in occupied Kashmir's Islamabad and Shopian districts by Indian forces were one of the worst in recent times with at least 12 youth martyred on Sunday, the largest one-day death toll of youth in the occupied valley in recent years.

The government regularly reviews the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and in order to prevent activities of militants, numerous steps have been taken including strengthening of operational grid with enhanced human intelligence and use of technical intelligence grid.

Authorities have also clamped a curfew in the old parts of the disputed region's main city of Srinagar, the urban centre of protests and clashes against Indian rule.

Another four Kashmiris were killed and scores of others injured when police opened fire on thousands of demonstrators who poured onto the streets, throwing stones and chanting slogans against Indian occupation. The Indian police also raided the residence of APHC leader, Muhammad Yousuf Naqash, in Srinagar and harassed his family members.

Twenty people were killed in India-held Kashmir in some of the fiercest clashes this year in the region on Sunday.

According to a Kashmir Media Service report, search operations were conducted in Islamabad and Shopian districts of South Kashmir.

Muslim separatists have been waging a violent campaign against Indian rule since the late 1980s in Indian-held Kashmir.

Separatist leaders called for a general strike in protest, even as Indian security forces sought to subdue the unrest by cutting Internet access in some areas and patrolling streets in riot gear.

Police and paramilitary troopers fired pellets and tear gas to disperse the protesters.

Pakistan, it said, expresses its full solidarity with Kashmiris and "we urge global community to take cognisance of the gross and systematic violations of fundamental human rights".

Officials said no incident of fresh violence was reported on Monday.

Global rights groups have repeatedly condemned the Indian crackdown and called on it to stop using shotgun pellets against protesters armed only with stones.

Some Kashmiri groups in Jammu and Kashmir have been fighting against Indian rule for independence, or for unification with neighboring Pakistan.

India regularly accuses Pakistan of arming and training militants and allowing them across the restive frontier in an attempt to launch attacks on Indian forces.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed in the conflict in Kashmir, which nuclear-armed India and Pakistan claim in full.
