Sessions declines to appoint second special counsel

BREAKING DOJ Inspector General Will Investigate Obama Administration FISA Abuse

The Republicans had called for Sessions to appoint a second special counsel to look into the FBI's handling of aspects of the investigation into Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election and matters related to former secretary of state Hillary Clinton and her family's foundation.

Huber has previously conducted investigations in a number of high-profile cases and led task forces focused on terrorism, according to the letter. Check back for updates.

Democrats dismissed the Republican allegations as nothing more than an attempt to protect President Trump and undermine special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

Huber was appointed by President Obama in 2015 as the USA attorney in Utah.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions at Port of Miami Terminal E, on August 16, 2017.

Republicans have been fuming about they see as bias within the FBI, while Democrats say the surveillance abuse allegations are created to undermine special counsel Robert Mueller's sprawling investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

NATO, too, expels Russian diplomats
Prime Minister Theresa May welcomed the move and said it sent a strong message to Moscow that it can not ignore global law. Tuesday's decision follows "Russia's lack of constructive response to what happened in Salisbury", the statement said.

Huber will be tasked with investigating allegations that the Federal Bureau of Investigation abused its powers, CNN reports, after Republicans called for a probe into the surveillance of a former Trump campaign adviser. His own involvement in any decision is further complicated by the fact that he is recused from all investigations related to the 2016 presidential campaign. While we continue to believe the appointment of a second Special Counsel is necessary, this is a step in the right direction.

The U.S. Justice Department has charged a former Minnesota FBI agent with leaking classified information to the online news site The Intercept, Minnesota Public Radio reported on Wednesday.

Sessions' letter was addressed to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., - each of whom has called on him to appoint a second special counsel. "T$3 he public interest requires the appointment of a special counsel".

Sessions also noted that he had directed the department's inspector general, Michael E. Horowitz, to open a probe into the allegations.

That individual is not named, but it appears to be a reference to Carter Page, who served as a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign.
