Waymo reveals special edition Jaguar I-PACE as self-driving cars go premium

Waymo to create luxury, self-driving electric car with Jaguar

The two companies plan to roll out a fleet of more than 20,000 self-driving, fully electric I-Pace SUVs in the next two years, which will give way to a possible one million rides per day.

On Tuesday, Waymo and Jaguar announced plans to jointly develop a large fleet of all-electric, self-driving luxury vehicles.

The vehicles will initially be accessible only via Waymo's ride hailing app. "This is a production-ready vehicle".

More broadly, Waymo's automotive partnerships help to support the Google subsidiary's autonomous driving ambitions as rivals Tesla and Uber race to put self-driving cars on the road. The Waymo executive very boldly assured everyone last week that he had "a lot of confidence" that his company's technology would've stopped before hitting her.

Many companies working on self-driving cars test them in Arizona to take advantage of the state's cooperative weather - consistently clear and sunny - and simple regulations.

Waymo already has forged a deal with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. (NYSE: FCAU) for unspecified thousands of the company's Chrysler Pacifica minivans.

Importantly, Waymo's autonomous driving technology will be built into the I-Paces at the factory in Graz, Austria, rather than being added after the fact by Waymo in the US.

But the team is showing signs of promise under Schmid, the club's veteran German-American coach, and has opened the season 1-1-0. If he feels comfortable immediately, he could even debut in a derby against their new archrival Los Angeles FC on March 31.

"We're sure Waymo riders will enjoy the safe, premium and delightful experience that the self-driving I-Pace will provide".

Waymo's introduction of the new auto comes a little more that a week after an Uber self-driving vehicle killed a woman in Tempe, Arizona.

"This is the self-driving car that car lovers have been looking for", he said while unveiling one of the vehicles a day before the NY auto show.

Back in October 2017, Waymo conducted the first public road tests with no one in the driver's seat in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler.

Krafcik also noted that Waymo is on the verge of "shifting focus from research and development to operations".

"There will no doubt be an exhaustive investigation of the tragic incident involving an Uber self-driving vehicle and a pedestrian", Akshay Anand, an analyst at Kelley Blue Book, said in an emailed statement.
