What we know about the Miami bridge collapse

Cars trapped after deadly bridge collapse
The engineering firm behind the Florida bridge that collapsed Thursday afternoon, killing at least six people, were also the designers of several bridges in Virginia.
The pedestrian bridge, which was recently installed on March 10, collapsed down during the busy rush hours at Miami on Thursday.
To limit disruption to traffic, the 174-foot portion of the bridge was built using a method called Accelerated Bridge Construction before being driven into its position over the road using a rig.
The University estimated some 4,000 students reside in the nearby city. Police say they expect that number to go up.
At one point, police urged television helicopters to leave the area so that rescuers could hear any cries for help from those trapped beneath the collapsed structure, CBS Miami television said.
"This has turned from a rescue to a recovery operation", said Miami-Dade Police Det.
The National Transportation Safety Board said on Twitter that it was sending a team to investigate the bridge collapse.
The two firms responsible for building Florida International University's "instant bridge", which suddenly collapsed Thursday and left six people dead, are coming under increased scrutiny as details emerge of past engineering failures and inspection fines - including a recent accusation that one hired "unskilled" and "careless" workers.
The Florida governor added that an exhaustive investigation now beginning will get to the bottom of "why this happened and what happened" and vowed that anyone who did anything wrong would be held accountable.
Amazon says it's working to fix Alexa's laughing problem
But Amazon was quick to acknowledge the defect in its device and has issued a statement that it is working on removing the defect. It can also sometimes happen when you're in the middle of a "conversation" or activity with Alexa , which is still pretty creepy.
The pedestrian bridge was a collaboration between Miami-based MCM Construction and Figg Bridge Design, which is based in Tallahassee. Our bridges are self-supported as soon as the structure is put into place.
Maine Department of Transportation spokesman Ted Talbot said the department was preparing a statement regarding FIGG's work in Maine it would release Friday.
Mark Rosenberg, the president of the university, said tests were being done on Thursday.
Our hearts go out to the individuals and families that have been affected by this incident.
"I looked up, and in an instant, the bridge was collapsing on us completely".
Rubio, who is an adjunct professor at the school, noted the pedestrian bridge was meant to be an innovative and "one-of-a-kind engineering design". The college said the bridge's construction would lead to decreased traffic in the area, The Miami Herald reported.
"I heard a "boom" like a bomb had exploded", he said. "In our 40-year history, nothing like this has ever happened before".
Chuck Zugell is a project manager with Walsh Granite Joint Venture, which is part of the consortium running the RBRP, a five-year effort to replace about 12 percent of Pennsylvania's roughly 4,500 structurally deficient bridges.
"The bridge was about collaboration, about neighborliness, about doing the right thing", he said.
