Nikolai Glushkov a Russian exile and former associate of the late oligarch Boris Berezovsky has reportedly been found dead at his home in London

Andrei Borovkov told Russian media outlets on Tuesday that his client, Nikolai Glushkov, was found dead inside his south London home and that he was unaware of the time and circumstances.

The Metropolitan police also said that "the death is now being treated as an unexplained", while "there is no evidence to suggest a link to the incident in Salisbury".

Mr Glushkov's friend Damian Kudryavtsev posted a tribute on his Facebook page, with a photo of of Mr Glushkov and the simple message: "Nikolai Glushkov 1949-2018".

Mr Glushkov was a close friend of Putin critic Boris Berezovsky, and had said he did not believe Mr Berezovsky's death was due to natural causes.

In a statement, it said the man in his 60s had been found at a residential address in New Malden on Monday night. British Home Secretary Amber Rudd said police and the domestic security service will look into 14 deaths in Britain that might be linked to Russian Federation.

Glushkov worked in the 1990s for the state airline Aeroflot and Berezovsky's LogoVAZ auto company.

After Mr Berezovsky was found hanged in the bathroom of his Berkshire home in March 2013, Mr Glushkov told The Guardian he would "never believe" his friend took his own life. "I have quite different information from what is being published in the media", he said.

In 2000, he was arrested in connection with the embezzlement of Aeroflot's funds, and later charged with fraud and money laundering. "[But] I don't believe it was suicide", Glushkov said.

In 2010, he fled to the United Kingdom, where he was granted political asylum.

News of Glushkov's death comes amid heightened tensions between the London and Moscow over the recent poisoning of a former Russian agent and his daughter.

But his case was revived by a Moscow court last year, which sentenced him in absentia to eight years for allegedly embezzling more than $122m from Aeroflot.
