Tiger Woods reacts after sinking a birdie putt during his second round
Tiger Woods fell short of an 80th PGA Tour title on Sunday but still gave adoring fans a thrill late in the final round at the Valspar Championship.
Per Harig, Woods is in his best position to win a tournament since he tied for 10th at the 2015 Wyndham Championship.
With victory apparently out of his grasp, Woods stroked a 43-foot birdie putt that broke perfectly into the middle of the 17th hole and took him to the last with a chance of a playoff. No one caught him, giving Casey his first PGA Tour victory since the 2009 Houston Open.
He got his stiffest challenge from Tolles, who was bogey-free before he three-putted the tough par-3 17th.
Woods opened with a two-putt birdie to briefly tie for the lead.
"I'm looking forward to it, [and] I'm looking forward to next week", he said.
And it felt like it always did as he came up the 18th hole, 185 yards away, needing a birdie to tie Casey.
Woods very much has a chance to win this tournament when he tees off at 1:50 p.m. ET with Brandt Snedeker, who is T-2 and 8 under with Woods and Justin Rose after a 4-under 67.
A highly charged PGA Tour event ended with one player ending a long victory drought, just not the one most fans came to see.
Casey past year rejoined the European Tour so he would be eligible. The 21-year-old from India shot a 75 to tie for seventh, seven shots behind.
Woods has endured a hard few years - with his last tour victory coming at the Bridgestone Invitational in August 2013 - but is beginning to show some promising signs ahead of the Masters next month. Each week has been a little better.
He just couldn't deliver after a two-putt birdie on the par-5 opening hole.
Speaking to Sky Sports following the Valspar Championship, Woods said: 'It was a very good week, I feel like I improved [from last month's Honda Classic]. Unfortunately, I didn't play. before his passing. "I played very conservatively into the greens but I just wasn't as sharp as I was yesterday.and it was one of those days where I kept getting the half club and just couldn't quite get the full club", he said. He missed a couple of putts in the 15-foot range.
He's bested that a record eight times at Bay Hill, though, site of next week's event.
"I keep getting a little bit better here and there, making these little subtle tweaks", said Woods, who was sidelined for all of 2016 before an abortive comeback bid a year ago. "Couple putts here and there would have been a different story". He twirled his club.
Casey rallied from five shots behind.
Woods struggled to make inroads during the final round but set up a grandstand finish by draining a stunning 44-foot birdie on the penultimate hole, but was unable to replicate it at the last.
