Galaxy S9 and S9+ May Shine Brightest as S6, S7 Replacement
While we previously predicted that Samsung'snew flagship Galaxy Note 9, due out in 3Q18, will come equipped with an under-display fingerprint recognition function, we now believe Samsung will cancel this feature on Note 9 because both ultrasonic (provided by Qualcomm) and optical (provided by Samsung LSI, Goodix, Egis, and Synaptics) solutions can not meet Samsung's technical requirements. An analyst believes that Samsung might not include an in-display fingerprint scanner for the Note 9 when it's released later this year. Of course, Samsung is particular with its smartphones, and it probably wasn't happy with how long it takes for the technology to recognize your biometrics.
This means that at least for the time being, the VivoX20 Plus U20 is going to be the only phone with an in-display fingerprint scanner.
It is unclear when Samsung will commercialize the new technology. It already learned that lesson and mobile division chief DJ Koh himself hinted that the company will take a "when it's ready" approach to new products and features.
While there are several new features introduced in the S9 smartphones, it's not all about what's now. Ming-Chi Kuo now expects Samsung to bring the feature to market in the first half of 2019 at the earliest. The Note has been said to apply an under-display sensor which is something Samsung wasn't' able to do on the S9. Meanwhile, Synaptics already launched its under-glass optical fingerprint sensor the previous year.
In all honesty, the camera on the S9 is quite good, but considering we have tested the GooglePixel 2 extensively, Samsung's new offering is not as good. The company claims that there are technical issues associated with implementing the technology.
Knowing that I have the option of adding extra storage to the Galaxy S9 by purchasing a microSD card, many of which cost less than $100 depending on how much storage you want to add, it eased my worries that I would have to worry about storage on my phone. The feature does not work well with screen protectors, and "environments" which results in a less than stellar success rate. In its place, Apple implemented Face ID, a facial recognition system Apple touted as being both more secure and reliable than Touch ID.
