Catch a ride to your doctor's
On Monday, Lyft announced a new partnership with Allscripts, a large electronic health record company that reaches an estimate 7 million patients.
Lyft will integrate its proprietary API into Allscripts Sunrise EHR system to incorporate non-emergency transportation services directly into physician workflows. Providers determine who is eligible based on need, and costs are covered by providers and sometimes defrayed by insurance.
About 3.6 million Americans miss or delay non-emergency medical appointments every year due to such issues, according to a 2005 study published by the National Academy of Sciences.
Lyft is doubling down on helping patients get rides to the doctor in hopes of closing the health care transportation gap in half by 2020.
A survey of Boston Uber users found that most said they would have used public transport, walked, or biked to their destination if the ride-sharing service was unavailable.
Blue Cross Blue Shield, Sutter, and CareLinx - among other healthcare organizations - already use Lyft to bring patients in for appointments.

The ride-hailing firm has been testing Uber Health with a beta group of hospitals and doctors since July, but the service is officially launching starting on Thursday. And as urban populations continue to grow, it is likely that more healthcare services and organizations will become part of the "smart city" conversation to excel urban health.
Transportation service company Uber recently launched Uber Health to help patients with medical transportation needs access care. They will be able to send the patient's ride details through text messages. Of the organizations Uber Health has paired with so far, many have been utilizing their transportation budgets to pay for the ride-sharing. "We're even going to be introducing the option for riders to receive a call with trip details to their mobile phone or landline instead", Weber elaborates.
The company stressed that Uber Health complies with HIPAA patient privacy laws.
With both Uber and Lyft, health care providers use a custom desktop platform that allows them to schedule multiple rides at once. "The stat is that missed appointments cost the healthcare system $150 billion per year", said Steingold. Accordingly, transportation for follow-up appointments can be taken care of while patients are still at the healthcare facility.
Additionally, if a patient experiences some kind of medical emergency in an Uber, the company says the driver is encouraged to call 911.
