Donald Trump Trades Roast-Worthy Jabs With Press At Annual Gridiron Dinner

After skipping such events in his first thirteen months in office, the President tried his hand at stand-up last night to mixed reviews.

But there he was at the Renaissance Washington Hotel for the club's 133rd annual gathering, accompanied by first lady Melania Trump. It wasn't broadcast but the reviews were mixed.

The Gridiron Club's annual dinner has been attended by most US presidents as well as opposition leaders.

Unlike the widely-televised White House Correspondents' Association dinner, which Trump chose to skip a year ago, there are no cameras allowed inside the white-tie Gridiron event. More out of place than the Mnuchins in a Waffle House.

It was, most reviews indicate, slightly less disastrous than the 2016 Al Smith dinner, during which Trump was booed for his so-called "jokes" about how much Hillary Clinton "hates Catholics". "Put that down!" Trump remarked.

"I offered him a ride over, and he recused himself".

"We were late tonight because Jared could not get through security", Trump said. "As far as risks with talking with a mad man-that's his concern, not mine". The president said he would sign paperwork detailing these plans this week. And your best reporter, Steve Bannon. "That guy leaked more than the Titanic!".

A cast member playing House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi turned to "I'm Against It", a song from the Marx Brothers film "Duck Soup", to explain her attitude toward Trump: "I don't know what Trump has to say/It makes no difference anyway/Whatever it is, we're against it/Even if our own side once professed it/We're against it".

Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, the Republican speaker, talked about a previous banquet: The 2011 correspondents dinner, in which then-President Barack Obama roasted Trump for his political ambitions and his persistent questioning about Obama's birthplace.

"So many people have been leaving the White House", Trump joked. "It's invigorating since you want turnover", Trump quipped. "I like chaos. It really is good", he said. "Who's going to be the next to leave - (aide) Steve Miller or Melania?".

While there's no official video or audio of the Gridiron Dinner, some folks shared snapshots on Twitter.

Russian Federation strengthened the grouping in Syria with the latest Su-57
Russian Federation supplies Syria with almost all its ground-to-air missiles, including the S-400. VeraLinn Jamieson said during a Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies briefing in the Capitol.

Umm, I hope that was a joke.

Trump also took aim at one of his favorite targets: the press, who he described as his "opposition party." I'm a NY icon, you're a NY icon. So let's see what happens ...

In one tweet, Trump again denounced the Russian Federation probe as a "WITCH HUNT".

For much of the night he was a good sport - laughing and applauding at times during the evening's entertainment.

"I do want to say this is one of the best times I can ever remember having with the media.

They've gone insane!" he attended the Gridiron Dinner where members of the Washington press corps were ready to take him and other political figures down with roast-worthy musical numbers and jokes. Active membership is limited to 65 Washington-based journalists.

"Nobody does self-deprecating humour better than I do", he told politicians and journalists in Washington DC.

Trump saved some of his edgier jokes for Democrats. "And I say - and I get in trouble for this - 'She has to immediately take an IQ test, ' and people go insane". Elizabeth Warren suggested the US, Iran and North Korea "smoke a peace pipe" - a remark about her claims of Native American heritage.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, appearing on NBC's Meet The Press, pushed back on reports that Trump is often angry at how things are going.

Trump warmed up his for his debut at the annual Washington ritual by tweeting out an attack on the media. Every president since has come to at least one Gridiron. He's going to be president?
