US President Donald Trump said that he endorses the candidacy of former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for the post of a senator from Utah.

The contentious relationship between President Trump and former MA governor Mitt Romney took an eye-popping turn Monday night as he endorsed his political nemesis to replace outgoing Sen.

"If Trump had said 4 years ago the things he says today about the KKK, Muslims, Mexicans, disabled, I would NOT have accepted his endorsement", Romney tweeted in March 2016.

The civil words between the two Republicans are very different from some words they have used about each other in the past - words like "phony" (Romney) and "loser" (Trump). On Monday, Trump said that he supported Romney's run and gave him his "full support and endorsement".

Mr Trump later invited Mr Romney to visit him during the presidential transition period before the inauguration, fueling speculation that the former MA governor was being considered to be Mr Trump's Secretary of State. "I hope that over the course of the campaign I also earn the support and endorsement of the people of Utah", CNN reported.

"Utah welcomes legal immigrants from around the world", he said in his announcement video.

Relations between the Senate hopeful and the President have not always been so cheery.

Sources close to Romney told the Associated Press Monday that the candidate would continue to criticize the president as senator if he believed Trump warranted it, while Romney claimed Friday that recent calls with Trump had been cordial and respectful.

Romney announced his run on February 16, hinting that he would be a different politician than Trump.

Romney made the remarks at a speech Friday night before core members of Utah's Republican Party at a party fundraising dinner in Provo.

The GOP's presidential nominee in 2012, Romney announced last week he would seek the nomination to replace retiring Sen.

All appeared to be forgiven after Trump snagged his surprise White House victory and Romney was rumored to be courting him for a secretary of state appointment. As Massachusetts governor, Romney enacted a sweeping health insurance overhaul that became a model for the insurance exchanges in 2010 Affordable Care Act.
