Venezuela sets presidential vote for April 22 after talks crumble

The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela announced Wednesday the holding of early presidential elections on April 22, in which president Nicolas Maduro assures he will win reelection until 2025, with or without opposition, reported dpa news.

The head of Venezuela's electoral authority, Tibisay Lucena, made the announcement Wednesday evening.

He highlighted the recent achievements of the Venezuelan Government in the elections for the Constituent Assembly and the municipal and regional elections, as well as its policy of dialogue with the opposition, with foreign observers.

The 2018 elections were originally scheduled to take place in December, but the ruling socialist party is eager to hold the elections as soon as possible, sensing its current advantage over a divided and weak opposition.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro will be running for re-election as the candidate of Venezuela's United Socialist Party (PSUV).

Maduro, a 55-year old former bus driver and union leader who has been president since 2013, appeared on Wednesday evening in front of a cheering crowd, who sang his campaign jingle, "Everyone with Maduro!" "If they dare to call abstention, we will give them a historical struggle, with or without the opposition, we will triumph in the presidential elections", he said in a rally. The opposition had called for guarantees from the government, including the release of political prisoners and the reinstatement of politicians who had been barred from office. We hope that on this occasion the Venezuelan opposition delegation will reach the Dominican Republic, and have the capacity for dialogue, negotiation and understanding.

That same day, Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina, who was brokering the talks, announced that dialogue between the government and the right-wing opposition had entered a stage of indefinite recess after the opposition refused to sign a draft agreement aimed at promoting peace and unity between the two parties.
