Rachel Brand, No. 3 official at DOJ, is stepping down

Rachel Brand, The Third-Ranking Justice Department Official, Is Stepping Down

The New York Times did not say that Trump's attacks on the Mueller probe were the reason that Brand was resigning. He also criticized Sessions in July for not firing McCabe. If Rosenstein resigned, that authority would have fallen to Brand under the department's succession line.

"Rachel Brand is a lawyer's lawyer", Sessions said in a statement.

White House counsel Donald McGahn said: "Although the President is inclined to declassify the February 5th Memorandum, because the Memorandum contains numerous properly classified and especially sensitive passages, he is unable to do so at this time".

"Thus, for those anxious that the president might try to prevent the Russian Federation investigation from running its course, Brand's resignation reduces the number of Senate-confirmed officials who would have to agree with the president (or whom the president would have to fire) to bring about that result", Prof.

Walmart said in a statement Friday that Brand would be the company's "Executive Vice President, Global Governance and Corporate Secretary".

And her departure leaves another vacancy at the justice department, which still lacks Senate-confirmed leaders over many of its most important divisions.

Brand's resignation is different in the sense that she was hand-picked for the job by Trump, assuming her post just five days after Mueller's appointment in May 2017.

The plan centers around rallying the worldwide community to further isolate North Korea both diplomatically and economically. Pence says he hasn't requested any meeting "but we'll see what happens".

The news comes a week after Trump approved the release of a classified memo by congressional Republicans that portrays the Russian Federation investigation as a product of political bias against Trump at the FBI and Justice Department. With her gone, the next person in line is Solicitor General Noel Francisco.

"She felt this was an opportunity she couldn't turn down", her friend and former colleague Jamie Gorelick said. Her job as associate deputy AG entailed overseeing the civil rights and antitrust divisions of the DOJ.

Trump has also publicly attacked the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which is a component of the Justice Department.

Brand recently pushed Congress to renew a foreign intelligence surveillance program that gives the USA government authority to spy on foreigners located outside the country.

"A lot of people should be ashamed of themselves and much worse than that", Trump said.

A graduate of Harvard Law School, where she was deputy editor-in-chief of the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, Brand clerked on the Massachusetts Supreme Court, and then on the U.S. Supreme Court for Justice Anthony Kennedy.
