Egypt: 4400 years of age Tomb found on the outskirts of Cairo

A general view shows well-preserved and rare wall paintings inside the tomb of an Old Kingdom priestess discovered by Egyptian archaeologists on the Giza plateau on the southern outskirts of Cairo

The archaeological mission behind the discovery started excavation work last October.

Hetpet was a high-ranking female official and daughter to the goddess of fertility - Hathor, who assisted women in childbirth in ancient Egypt.

Some portraits showed her in hunting and fishing scenes and receiving offerings from children, while others showcased people melting metals and dancing. The finding marks the first discovery to be announced in 2018, Ahram Online, an Egyptian news organization, reports.

On the walls of the tomb, there are depicted musical and dancing scenes, and also two monkeys, which were the favorite domestic animals of that epoch.

The tomb was discovered during an excavation mission in the Giza western cemetery region, which has been known to house the burial sites of former royal palace officials. The first scene depicts a monkey collecting fruits and the other a monkey dancing with a band. In December, Egyptian archaeologists unveiled two ancient tombs in the southern city of Luxor. We expect to find more.

For his part, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziri said that the tomb of the priest Hatbet probably is not the main tomb of the priest, as it is made of mud bricks with a mortar layer.

The mystery was discovered in Giza, Egypt, yesterday.

"We have removed between 250-300 cubic meters of layers of earth to find the tomb".

"What we see above the earth's surface in Egypt doesn't exceed 40 percent of what the core holds", Al-Waziri told The Associated Press.

In January, Egypt placed the ancient statue of one of its most famous pharaohs, Ramses II in the museum.

The tomb, which can be dated back to the Fifth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom or High Empire (2650-2100 BC), is decorated with paintings that show ancient Egyptian life from almost 4,000 years ago. Egypt's vital tourism sector has been hit hard by extremist attacks and political turmoil following the 2011 popular uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.
