'Pray For Us', Asks Gwede As ANC Top 6 Meet With Zuma

President Jacob Zuma, right, and the country's Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa, at an extended Cabinet meeting on January 31 to prepare for the president's state of the nation address.

This was to avoid him facing a motion of no confidence in Parliament, brought forward by the Economic Freedom Fighters, on February 22 as well as possible impeachment, the rules of which are set to be finalised before the joint rules committee's last house sitting for the term on March 15.

The ANC did not say what had been decided at the meeting between Mr Zuma and the party's "top six" leadership team at Mr Zuma's home in Pretoria, but it summoned its National Working Committee (NWC) to an urgent meeting on Monday afternoon (local time).

On Thursday the president of South Africa will deliver the state of the nation address to parliament, a keynote speech setting out the government agenda for the next year.

In its letter requesting the vote, the EFF said Zuma was not a suitable head of state as he is likely to be embroiled in a judicial inquiry into state corruption.

Arsenal win, to face Man Metropolis for Carabao Cup
Redknapp, who believes Conte has been "undermined", says he can not envision the 48-year-old remaining in his post beyond the end of the season.

Zuma has survived several no-confidence votes thanks to his ruling ANC party, which holds the majority in parliament. However, Zuma still has support within the top 6 with Secretary General Ace Magashule and his deputy Jessie Duarte defending his continued stay at Union Buildings.

Zuma has been deserted by many party members after his position was taken over by Ramaphosa, who has been lobbying to force him to resign. The Democratic Alliance was unsuccessful in its bid to have the Sona postponed.

On the other hand, Zuma has become a liability and many members want the president to leave soon so the ANC, can rebuild ahead of 2019 elections.

The upcoming motion of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma should be conducted through a secret ballot, EFF leader Julius Malema said on Saturday.

ANC spokeswoman Khusela Diko would not confirm or deny the crucial meeting on Sunday.
