California Teacher Facing Backlash Over Anti-Military Rant

31 January 2018, 08:49 | Katrina Lee

Amid mounting backlash, after the video was posted to Facebook, demands have been made for Salcido to be fired.

Gregory Salcido, who works at a high school in Pico Rivera and also serves on the city council, said in the video that members of the military fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan were "the lowest of the low".

On Monday, Victor Quinonez told KTLA he recorded the videos because he was exhausted of hearing disparaging remarks about the military from the teacher.

Salcido has been removed from all committees on the Rico Rivera City Council over his remarks, according to CBS Los Angeles.

"It's not ... about freedom of speech".

At the time, Quinonez, who is a senior, was wearing a Marine Corps sweatshirt, which prompted the teacher to say, "You better not go".

"To say it to the youth is wrong", he told KTLA. "To bully my son is wrong, to discriminate against people who want to be in the military is wrong", said Vincent Quinonez. "It was just meant for some other veterans to see".

Quinonez' mother, Karen Rodriguez, told KTLA she was keeping her son home from school Monday because he has received threats since the video was posted. "The teacher's name is Mr. Salcido". They're dumb sh*ts. They're not high-level bankers.

He then goes on to suggest that you would only join the military as a last resort: 'So, if you join the military, it's because you had no other options. "They're not intellectual people".

Liverpool's win over City feels like six months ago for Klopp
As for Swansea they can welcome back right-back Kyle Naughton & Mike van der Hoorn from suspension and injury respectively. Swansea are having a very poor season, picking up just four wins and 17 points from their first 23 games this season.

On Friday, Salcido posted a statement on his personal Facebook page from NY. So far, the post has been shared more than 90,000 times and has provoked around 23,000 comments.

Salcido also happens to be a city council member in this small So Cal community, and now city leaders may take action.

The school board said it is investigating, and Salcido's fellow City Council members have expressed dismay.

"We the elected governing body of the City of Pico Rivera unequivocally disagree and condemn the recent comments made by Councilmember Salcido regarding those individuals who have served or are now serving in our nation's military", the statement said.

The El Rancho Unified School District, where Salcido teaches, told the station an investigation is underway. She said that, at this time, Salcido will not be returning to El Rancho High School.

"Our classrooms are not the appropriate place for one-sided discussions that undermine the values our families hold dear".

Salcido was at the center of another controversy in 2012 after he acknowledged he smacked a student on the back of his head for allegedly being disruptive in class.

The Quinonezes were expected to meet with school officials Monday in hope of ensuring the safety of Victor and his siblings.
