FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe has told FBI staff he is stepping down effective Monday - a move that surprised even those expecting his March retirement, sources tell CNN.

Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the White House played no role in his resignation.

Trump also targeted McCabe for the FBI's investigation into 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while serving as the country's secretary of state.

WASHINGTON - Andrew McCabe on Monday left his job as deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation after enduring withering attacks from President Trump and other Republicans.

But a source familiar with the matter said FBI Director Christopher Wray told McCabe he is bringing in his own team, which he would not be a part of, and that it was McCabe's decision whether to stay at the FBI or leave.

The inspector general is also looking into whether Comey made improper decisions, including his decision to announce the FBI would not recommend charges and his subsequent decision to publicly announce he was re-opening the investigation just 11 days before the 2016 election, after new emails were discovered.

Storms Possible Overnight into Tuesday Morning
The high temperature Tuesday in Oklahoma City will be near 53 degrees with winds just 3 miles per hour to 6 miles per hour . High resolution NAM model shows scattered showers and storms in the region around 10 a.m.

Trump in December referred to the FBI's reputation as being in "tatters", and has also publicly criticized U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions for recusing himself from the Russian Federation probe, a move that paved the way for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint Mueller after Comey's firing.

"The president wasn't part of this decision-making process".

President Donald Trump did not answer a reporter's question at the White House about McCabe's departure.

Trump's dislike of McCabe dates back to October 2016, when news stories revealed McCabe's wife had run as a Democrat for the Virginia state legislature, aided with almost $500,000 in donations from the political action committee of then-Governor Terry McAuliffe, a close ally of Hillary Clinton, and that McCabe had gone on to oversee probes involving Clinton. In December, Trump tweeted "FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is racing the clock to retire with full benefits". But as a civil service employee, McCabe could not be fired without clear evidence of wrongdoing. The FBI has said McCabe received the necessary ethics approval before his wife received the donations.

Strzok and Page used words like "idiot" and "loathsome human" to describe Trump during the campaign.
