ESPN MSU Sought End to Federal Oversight of Title IX Investigations

The disgraced former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison, a judge announced Wednesday, after more than 150 women and girls said in court that he sexually abused them over the past two decades.

The investigation will be led by retired Kent County prosecutor William Forsyth, assisted by the Michigan State Police director, Col. Kriste Etue, who said she will help determine whether crimes were committed.

Assistant Attorney General Christina Grossi has been named project manager. “This investigation will be independent, thorough, transparent and prompt.”.

Lemke, who will graduate from MSU this December, said she's glad that officials are accepting responsibility for how the Nassar scandal was mishandled, but she also hopes that the university takes steps to ensure sexual abuse never happens again.

Former gymnast Rachael Denhollander, left, is hugged by Kaylee Lorincz after giving her victim impact statement during the seventh day of Larry Nassar's sentencing hearing Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018, in Lansing, Mich. Nassar has admitted sexually assaulting athletes when he was employed by Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, which is the sport's national governing organization and trains Olympians.

Forsyth will work full time on the investigation. "I am running toward something", Hollis told reporters Friday morning.

One of Nassar's accusers, Kyle Stephens, said Michigan State needs to be "accountable for everything that they've done".

At the university board's meeting, Chairman Brian Breslin said it was "clear that MSU has not been focused enough on the victims".

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will also be a member of the committee which includes all top Congress leaders of the state.

"Quite frankly, I think that's in part what got Michigan State in some trouble here in the sense that they withheld certain information - maybe because it was going to put them in a better light", Forsyth said.

The entire USA Gymnastics (USAG) board has said it will comply with a US Olympic Committee's (USOC) ultimatum to resign over an abuse scandal.

He also acknowledged the MSU Board of Trustees' request for the Attorney General's office to review the events surrounding the Nassar case. He said his goals are to find out who at MSU was aware of Nassar's sexual misconduct, what action they took and why the predatory conduct wasn't stopped.

"I said that he was putting his fingers inside of me.and that it was uncomfortable, and at that point she just said she couldn't believe that was happening.that was somebody she trusted and knew for years", Boyce said.

The MSU board announced on Friday that its vice-president, Bill Beekman, would serve as acting president until an interim president and then a permanent president is appointed.

Schuette did so, but jabbed the board over the suggestion at a press conference in his office Saturday.

Spokeswoman Anna Heaton said Friday the governor is studying whether the potential move could interfere with other investigations. Under the state constitution, the governor can remove or suspend public officers for "gross neglect of duty", corruption or "other misfeasance or malfeasance".

The patient, Amanda Thomashow, received an abbreviated version of the 2014 report, which found that Nassar's conduct wasn't sexual in nature and therefore didn't violate the school's sexual harassment policy.
