Abe, Moon to hold summit on Feb.9
US military exercises with South Korea will be held after the Olympics as planned despite a demand for a complete suspension from the North, the Pentagon said.
South Korea's advance team led by Ri Ju Thae, department director of the Ministry of Unification, visited the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) from Tuesday to Thursday, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Saturday.
South Korean and US defense chiefs met Friday to discuss North Korea, issuing a statement that continued diplomacy-backed sanctions can drive the rogue state to the negotiating table and tamp down the escalating threats between Pyongyang and Washington.
Fox News adds that one of the sources said North Korea's participation in the upcoming Winter Olympics, set to be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, is reportedly "a scheme to refill [Kim's] coffers".
With the Winter Olympics in South Korea approaching, Washington and Pyongyang have tamped down harsh rhetoric toward each other, although USA experts said the calm may be temporary.
"So, we'll continue to hold the line and provide credible military options so the diplomats can speak from a position of strength and persuasion", Mattis said.
Concern that the North Korean security situation could deteriorate after next month's Winter Olympics in South Korea is likely behind Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's decision to attend the opening ceremony despite tensions between Tokyo and Seoul over the scars of their shared past.

Five generations of von Pfeffels later, a Marie Luise von Pfeffel married Stanley Fred Williams and had a daughter named Yvonne. While that clearly did more harm than good, the high levels of mercury in her system are what caused her body to be preserved.
It will be the first time Abe has visited South Korea since November 2015, when he attended a trilateral summit in Seoul with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Park, who was South Korea's president at the time but later felled by a corruption scandal.
"Diplomacy should (impose) reason on Kim's reckless rhetoric and risky provocations", Mattis said, referring to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
His trip to Seoul came as South and North Korea resumed high-level talks earlier this month, for the first time in more than two years, at the truce village of Panmunjom, to discuss the North's participation in the February 9-25 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
A South Korean government official said Sunday that Seoul is now considering the move as "the North's oil supplies aren't in good condition" but there has been criticism "this would go against the flow of global sanctions on Pyongyang".
The president's remarks have raised concerns in the region that the US and North Korea are hurtling toward a confrontation. South Korean military officials also have said the drills would resume but it's too soon to disclose the exact date and size.
Washington's sanctions in August also aim to ban exports of crude oil and petroleum products to North Korea due to its nuclear and missile programs.
