Deputy Secretary, South Korea's Vice Defense Minister Meet at Pentagon

Reduced Number Of Russian Athletes For Pyeong Chang 2018 Determined

North Korea's late decision to participate in the South's Games will cause logistically issues for the organisers, although the International Olympic Committee is expected to rubber-stamp the nations' plans at a meeting this weekend.

The number of Russian athletes eligible to take part at next month's Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang has been reduced from a pool of 500 to 389, the International Olympic Committee said on Friday.

North and South then reached a deal on a set of momentous compromises, including having delegations from both countries march together at the opening ceremony and the formation of a unified women's hockey team.

No North Korean athlete had technically qualified for Pyeongchang, so Saturday's announcement required extending qualification deadlines in the sports concerned.

"The leaders reaffirmed the ironclad nature of the alliance, and the importance of maintaining vigilance and unity in the face of North Korean aggression", it said.

That would appear to rule out potential Russian medal contenders like former NHL hockey player Anton Belov and world champion speedskater Pavel Kulizhnikov, both of whom served bans in the past but have since resumed competing.

Turkish President Erdogan promises to 'drown' new Syrian Kurdish border security force
First of all, it is safe to assume that Turkish-U.S. relations will hit rock bottom in light of the most recent developments. A YPG spokesman in Afrin, Rojhat Roj, said new Turkish reinforcements could be seen arriving at the border overnight.

At least three North Korean players will feature in each match but South Korea's Canadian coach Sarah Murray will be in charge of the team.

North Korea will also send 24 officials and 21 media representatives to Pyeongchang, Bach said.

They were therefore handed one quota place while two male North Korean competitors were given places in the short track speed skating.

While South Korea hopes to use the games to improve relations with its rival after a year of animosity over North Korea's rapidly expanding nuclear program, some experts view Kim's overture as an attempt to weaken US-led global sanctions against the North and buy time to further advance his nuclear weapons programme.

Paik Hak-soon, the director of the Centre for North Korean studies at Sejong Institute in South Korea, said North Korea was using the cheering squad to draw attention to its apparent cooperative spirit.

For starters, the International Olympic Committee decided in December to ban Russian Federation from the games beginning the first week of February due to a state-backed doping scandal.
