Twitter to notify users exposed to Russian propaganda during 2016 United States elections

Check your email to see if you got duped by a Russian Twitter bot during the 2016 election
And 677,775 people saw, followed or retweeted one of these accounts during that same period, and are being notified.
Twitter Inc, which is reviewing Russian interference during the 2016 U.S. elections, said on Friday it would notify some of its users whether they were exposed to content generated by a suspected Russian propaganda service.
After being pressured by the USA government to reveal their role in the social engineering effort, both Facebook and Twitter launched investigations that found they had not only hosted fake accounts, but also profited by running promoted posts paid for by Russian groups seeking to influence the election.
All the suspicious accounts in question have been suspended, noted Twitter's blog post.
Twitter had previously said automated accounts were responsible for 1.4 million election-related tweets that received 288 million views.
Twitter said most "user engagement" was with a very small number of IRA-associated accounts.
"We have also provided Congress with the results of our supplemental analysis into activity believed to be automated, election-related activity originating out of Russian Federation during the election period", Twitter said.
The top Democrat from the intelligence committee in the U.S. House praised on Friday the move taken by Twitter and urged other technology companies to continue investigating abuse on their own platforms by the Russians during the country's 2016 elections. The IRA was reportedly operating on orders from the Russian government. Twitter says it's now uncovered more accounts and new information on the wide-reaching Russian cyberintelligence campaign. The nation was found to have used major social media platforms, namely Facebook and Twitter, in an effort to manipulate the public, destabilize the nation's population, stir up tensions, and more.
Those accounts posted 175,993 tweets, approximately 8.4 percent of which were election related, Twitter said.
The accounts include @TEN_GOP, a Republicans group in Tennessee that pushed pro-Donald Trump tweets, @Pamela_Moore13, a conservative personality, and @crystal1johnson, a black woman who was critical of United States police. The newly discovered accounts brings the total number of Russian bots to 50,258.
Twitter said it is "investing further in machine-learning capabilities that help us detect and mitigate the effect on users of fake, coordinated and automated account activity".
Twitter also handed over information to Congress on automated, election-related activity coming from Russian Federation during the 2016 campaign.
