Tim Cook Says iPhone Users Can Turn Off Throttling -- Soon
20 January 2018, 03:51 | Dawn Berry
Next iOS Update Will Allow Users To Remove Performance Restrictions Due to Poor Battery Health
Alternatively we suppose if you do receive the link but want to keep the thread, then you'll have to wait until next week when Apple releases the fix, assuming that it works, of course.
It also will give them the option to turn off the throttling feature the company instituted a year ago to prevent older devices from shutting down when batteries became too weak.
After Apple was forced to apologize for intentionally slowing down the performance of older iPhones, the company's CEO is now saying customers will soon have the choice to stop battery throttling for good.
While there isn't a specific timetable for when the new features will be released, Cook said they will be available for testing in a developer release of iOS next month, before going public sometime after that.
Speaking with ABC News following the company's announcement that it would bring back billions of dollars in profit stored overseas, Apple CEO Tim Cook said a new iOS developer update will arrive next month that will allow iPhone users to see their battery's health.
While the apology added that Apple was dropping the charge of out-of-warranty battery replacements from $79 to $29, the announcement did not include Cook's claim about disabling the throttling issue in the future.
"Maybe we weren't clear", he said.
The bigger question now is will these moves help Apple avoid numerous lawsuits that it's facing because of this fiasco? Last week two beta updates were rolled out, and this fast pace may indicate that iOS 11.2.5 is nearly ready for prime time.
"We deeply apologize for anybody that thinks we had some other kind of motivation", Cook told ABC.
In December, Apple released an open letter explaining the updates, and promised a number of changes, including the upcoming software update and a reduction in price of the company's battery exchange program for users with affected models. This is because performance spikes can require more power than an old battery is capable of providing, which can result in a phone shutting down completely.
