The widely circulating flu strain, H3N2, can be detrimental to children and the elderly. But McDonald says the flu shot does cover other strains of influenza that are present.
The state tracks flu deaths only among those younger than 65, because health officials say it's a more accurate measure of the severity of a flu season. These vaccines are recommended for everyone 6 months and older. The majority of flu patients who were sick enough be hospitalized - and a majority of those who died from the flu - had not received the vaccine.
"Flu can cause death", Evans said.
Nationally, cases of seemingly health people dying suddenly from the flu have captured national attention. Nearly three weeks later, they have yet to take it down. CDC data suggests the flu trend in Missouri might have reached a peak.
"We haven't experienced a significant drop, so we'll have to probably take it on a week-by-week basis", said the hospital's chair of ER medicine Dr. Tammi Thomas.
