Student activist Joshua Wong has been sentenced by a Hong Kong court to a second jail term of three months for participating in the pro-democracy Umbrella Movement in 2014.

Tian made the remarks after the region's high court sentenced "Occupy Central" activists to a few months in jail on Wednesday.

Wong was charged with failing to comply with a court order to clear a road in the protest. "Even if we need to face prison sentencing, we will still continue to fight for democracy for the future".

Both the activists were sent to prison in spite of pleas from the activists' defense attorneys to delay the start of their sentences.

As he was being taken away to jail, Raphael Wong said: "Thank you, your honour, for your ruling".

Fourteen other defendants including activist Lester Shum were given suspended sentences on contempt charges.

Wong Ching-tak, the current union president, said the union's role in social movements and the threat of arrest had put off many applicants, stating that "not everyone is willing to stand at the front".

He criticized the government, accusing it of using courts to solve political problems.

"We are very disappointed with the ruling", Law said after the court denied bail to the Wongs.

The New York-based group Human Rights Watch (HRW) said at the time that the arrest and jailing of peaceful Occupy Central protesters raised concerns about Hong Kong's adherence to worldwide human rights standards. The city's highest court began hearing an appeal of that prison term on Tuesday.

"They can lock up our bodies, but they cannot lock up our minds", Wong, a leader of the political party Demosisto, told reporters outside the High Court in Hong Kong before his sentencing.

Hong Kong's 20 years under Chinese rule - A failed project?

According to the Basic Law, the mini-constitution in effect since Hong Kong's handover to China, Beijing promised to allow elections of the city's leader and legislators by universal suffrage as an "ultimate aim" under the "one country, two systems" arrangement.

Wong was jailed for six months in August on unlawful assembly charges for involvement in the storming of a fenced-off government forecourt known as Civic Square in September 2014, which sparked the wider Umbrella Movement rallies.
