The mission, only known as Zuma, was set for Thursday, pushed back to Friday and then again into the weekend. A backup two-hour launch is slated for tonight, January 8 at 8:00 p.m.

A reason for the most recent delay was not given, reports Florida Today.

SpaceX ended launch commentary five minutes into the flight, due to the classified nature of the US satellite.

According to the theory, both the International Space Station and the NRO satellite were set to fly over Cape Canaveral Air Force Station around the time of the November 2017 launching. Those numbers are much warmer than the 30 degrees temperatures forecasted for the Friday launch window by U.S. Air Force weather officials earlier in the week.

- SpaceX's first launch of the year - a secret satellite codenamed Zuma - lit up the Florida sky Sunday evening, putting on a dramatic show in the process.

"There is the possibility that residents of Brevard, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Voluisa counties may hear one or more sonic booms during the landing attempt".

SpaceX is kicking off the New Year with a long list of launches on its manifest. It's aiming for more this year, including the debut of the Falcon Heavy - a triple-core version of the Falcon 9 that will have all 27 engines firing at launch.

The Falcon 9 lifted off with the USA government's top secret Zuma payload, and its first stage returned to Cape Canaveral for landing around eight minutes later.
