07 January 2018, 06:07 | Stacy Ballard
Tennessee went for the two-point conversion, but Mariota was sacked by Daniel Sorenson, who forced a fumble that was scooped up and returned for an apparent safety that appeared to give the Chiefs the lead again. The two-point conversion attempt failed - and almost brought disaster for the Titans when Mariota was sacked, but officials ruled he was down before the ball came loose.
The Titans are on the scoreboard after Ryan Succop's 49-yard field goal, and they got some help from the officiating crew just to trim their deficit to 14-3 late in the first half.
The Titans drew to within a touchdown on a 35-yard run by Derrick Henry with 14:08 left in the fourth quarter.
The clock wound down and the Titans won their first playoff game since the 2003 season. Alex Smith has been nothing short of incredible this season, and with the Titans rush defense looking to take away Kareem Hunt, this game will be all on Alex Smith.
Kelce didn't return to the game and the Chiefs struggled offensively in the second half. They absorbed what turned out to be a massive blow on that last drive, when Kelce was knocked from the game on a helmet-to-helmet hit. At the end of the Titans' opening drive of the second half, Mariota attempted pass on third-and-goal from the Chiefs' 6-yard line.
Mariota improved to 2-14 in his career when trailing by 14 or more points, per ESPN Stats & Information, with both victories coming in Kansas City. With the score at 21-16, the Titans lined up for two, but they ran a terribly designed play that gained one-yard and would've been nullified by an Illegal Shift penalty regardless. The Titans quarterback snagged it and dove into the end zone to cut Kansas City's lead to 21-10.
The Chiefs needed a break, and seemed to get it when Peters stripped the ball from Henry; Johnson recovered the ball and ran it back 56 yards.
But replay showed Henry was clearly down by contact.
