The Last Jedi (Already) Set to Pass $1 Billion at Box Office

Box Office: The Force Remains Strong With 'Last Jedi'

Third place went to that breaker of comic-book movie glass ceilings, "Wonder Woman", which lassoed $412.6 million in domestic ticket sales ($409.3 million overseas) for Warner Bros., minting two new A-list stars in the process - the actress Gal Gadot and the director Patty Jenkins.

Make it three in a row for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Likewise, it does not cover the millions spent on production and marketing. Led by Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" was the fourth biggest movie of the year, while "Spider-Man: Homecoming" rounded out the top five. It also does not factor in the sales from merchandising and other side revenues. The Force Awakens is now the third highest grossing film ever made and it was largely fueled by the being the first significant Star Wars release in years and it also featured the return of the original cast. The official LEGO online store is now selling the LEGO Star Wars 2018 range, but does not yet have this particular set in stock.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens kicked things off in 2015 with a whopping $2.068 billion globally.

Mr. Scott also had a tough time over the weekend with "All the Money in the World" (Sony), a crime drama about the 1973 kidnapping of John Paul Getty III and his grandfather's refusal to pay a $17 million ransom. It is pacing 36 percent of ahead of last year's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

"Going to the movies is truly a worldwide phenomenon", said comScore's Senior Media Analyst, Paul Dergarabedian.

The 2017 holiday shopping season brought record sales to Amazon
In 2017, Amazon increased the size of its fulfillment and shipping network by more than 30% in square footage worldwide. Despite the perks, it's not clear how many of Amazon's millions of new Prime members will stick around.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now showing in theaters everywhere. As of this writing, the sequel sits at over $914 million.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle came in second at the box office this weekend with $50.5 earned.

The Last Jedi made a splash in its global opening weekend.

Star Wars is likely looking at some serious box office numbers for a few more years before that ceiling begins to level off.
