Iran warns protesters will 'pay the price'

The Iranian Students News Agency quoted Mashhad Governor Mohammad Rahim Norouzian as saying that police had eventually dispersed the protests while a number of demonstrators had been taken into custody.

Dr. Hamdan Al-Shehri, a Saudi political analyst and worldwide relations scholar in Riyadh, said the demonstrations were a clear signal of the Iranian people's frustration with regime policies.

The semiofficial Ilna news agency reported there were smaller protests in Neyshabour, Kashmar, Yazd, and Shahroud on December 28.

Hundreds of Iranians protested in the northeastern city of Mashhad against the rising cost of food and other essentials, with local authorities saying an unspecified number of people had been arrested.

Iranians protesting the country's strained economy gathered in Tehran and another major city on Friday, for the second day of spontaneous, unsanctioned demonstrations placing pressure on President Hassan Rouhani's government. "Forget Syria, think of us" read the protesters' banners.

Reports say at least 52 protestors have been arrested so far.

Thousands of Iranians took to the streets throughout the country on Thursday to protest against the deteriorating economic situation. "They just want to ignites fires in different countries; they want to destabilize the region; they are playing with fire", he said.

There had been concerns that she could face up to 25 years in jail, or even the death penalty. "She's the kindest person". The trial was rescheduled with a new interpreter on Tuesday, where a judge handed her three years in prison.

Videos posted online showed a crowd in Mashhad chanting "death to Rouhani" and "death to the dictator", and police using water cannon to disperse it.

The report quoted the security deputy of Tehran's governor, Mohsen Hamedani, as saying that fewer than 50 people gathered at a public square in Tehran, and that a lot of them left after a police warning but a few made a decision to stay on.

Commentators saw it as a referring to Iran's economic and military support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad at a time when Iranian citizens are suffering from poverty and other issues.

Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri, a close Rouhani ally, suggested that hardline conservative opponents of the pragmatist president might have triggered the protests but lost control of them.

President Rouhani promised that the deal he signed with world powers in 2015, which saw Iran limit its nuclear activities in return for the lifting of global sanctions, would boost economic growth.

Unemployment stood at 12.4 percent in this fiscal year, according to the Statistical Centre of Iran, up 1.4 percent from the previous year.

Mashhad was one of the worst-hit areas by the closure of Mizan, which had around one million accounts, leading to several protests in the city since 2015 according to the official IRNA news agency.
