Kremlin offers to be mediator between the U.S. and North Korea

Lavrov China able to become world’s top economic power

On Tuesday, the Kremlin, which has long called for the two sides to hold negotiations, said it was ready to act as a mediator if the United States and North Korea were willing for it to play such a role. The fresh sanctions aim to limit its access to refined petroleum products and crude oil and its earnings from workers overseas.

Last week Russian Federation and China voted in favor of a USA -proposed measure in the U.N. Security Council to impose additional economic sanctions on North Korea as part of an escalating effort to clamp down on that country's nuclear program. North Korean officials said that the test put U.S. within the range of its ICBM.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on December 26 that Moscow was willing to act as a mediator in the row "if both sides need it and want it".

Lavrov disagreed with USA threats of military intervention and further sanctions against North Korea, instead pushing for US diplomacy to seek a more peaceful approach to negotiations, the statement said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov believes that the main problem in relations with the United States is the "Russo-phobic hysteria" that has prevailed in Washington.
