A UN Security Council resolution calling for the withdrawal of Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem (al-Quds) as Israel's capital has been backed by every council member except the US, which used its veto.

The resolution, submitted by Egypt, criticized decisions that seek to alter "the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem" and called for them to be rescinded, but stopped short of naming US President Donald Trump and the US explicitly.

With all the other 14 members of the Council, including its allies Britain and France, uniting against the US, Permanent Representative Nikki Haley cast the veto-powered negative vote killing the resolution on Monday.

In an effort to keep Washington from exercising its veto power, the text did not mention the USA by name, saying instead it "deeply regrets recent decisions regarding the status of Jerusalem".

Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the UN, said in the Security Council that "the United States had the courage and honesty to recognise a fundamental reality".

Ahead of the vote, Haley said the Security Council was putting peace out of reach by "injecting itself" into the conflict and passing judgement on issues that should be decided by direct negotiation between the parties.

The US stance "stands against the worldwide consensus, contravenes the resolutions of global community and Security Council resolutions and represents a complete bias with the occupation and aggression", spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh said in a statement.

This was the first time the USA exercised its veto since Trump became President.

Stefanik votes for reciprocal concealed carry measure
Both parties saw defections with 14 Republicans- including the head of the Congressional Second Amendment Caucus, U.S. Democrats also criticized Republicans for including a bill on background checks in the concealed-carry legislation.

The recent decisions mentioned include President Trump's move to reverse decades of USA policy on December 6 when he Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and announced plans to move the American embassy there from Tel Aviv.

NPR's Michele Kelemen reported for newscast that Egypt sponsored the resolution in order to "demonstrate that much of the world opposes Trump's action, including US allies on the security council, Britain and France, who see Jerusalem as a shared capital of Israel and a future Palestinian state". This has infuriated the Palestinians and other Muslims across the world. The Palestinians want East Jerusalem, now occupied by Israel, as the capital of their future independent state.

Israel seized control of the eastern part of the city in the 1967 Middle East war and sees all of Jerusalem as its undivided capital.

This has infuriated the Palestinians and Arab countries, which have strongly protested against the USA move. And she insisted that this position "is fully in line with the previous Security Council resolutions".

Nine votes in favour plus the support of all five veto-wielding members of the council were needed to pass the resolution. The United States is a genuine partner.in the Balfour Declaration...

"The United States will continue to play an extremely important role in the search for peace in the Middle East".

"Thank you, Ambassador Haley", he posted on his official Twitter account. One defeated the many.
