03 December 2017, 12:59 | Kristen Gross
Leclerc is a current member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, and he is widely considered one of the future stars of Formula One.
Sauber announced earlier this week it would be racing as "Alfa Romeo Sauber" in 2018, heralding the return of the Alfa Romeo name to F1 after more than 30 years.
This season the 20-year-old from Monaco has tested with both Ferrari and Sauber, and enjoyed another four F1 practice outings with the latter, who will be known as the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team for 2018.
The announcement was made by Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne on Saturday. During the event, a previous generation F1 vehicle was unveiled featuring a red and white livery and a prominent Alfa Romeo badge (above, with Leclerc and Ericsson).
Wehrlein, who won five points in 2017, is left without a seat, with Williams the only team left with an opening following Felipe Massa's retirement. Instead, the Italian will be Sauber's third driver, effectively meaning he is in a reserve role.
Sauber has unveiled its concept livery for the 2018 Formula 1 season, in the wake of its collaboration with FCA brand Alfa Romeo.
"The motor we use will be the same one Ferrari use", Marchionne said.
In a speech, Marchionne also thanked Sauber Holding chairman Pascal Picci and Swedish billionaire Finn Rausing for their support in reaching a deal that should boost a team that finished last overall this year.
