Flights disrupted as Bali volcano spews ash
27 November 2017, 01:02 | Katrina Lee
GETTYIncreased volcanic activity had prompted fears a major eruption was imminent
Airlines have been issued a "red warning" about the danger of volcanic ash in the skies close to Bali after Mount Agung emitted a thick plume of smoke more than 1,500m (4,921ft) high. However it warned that the movement of ash cloud is highly unpredictable and flights could still be cancelled at short notice.
Qantas, Virgin and Dutch airline KLM soon followed Jetstar's lead in cancelling flights.
"All flights are back to normal", said Herson, head of the local airport authority, who uses one name.
In shock live footage, the distant volcano can be seen emitting thick ash in the video below while courageous monitors look on across the forest.
There have been no new evacuations in Bali and a six kilometre exclusion zone around the volcano has not been extended.
Satellite imagery Sunday showed the volcanic ash drifting east and southeastward towards Lombok Island.

Government volcanologist Gede Suantika said a red-yellow light visible in ash above the mountain was the reflection of lava in the crater.
Bali is a popular tourist destination, known for its seaside resorts and sandy beaches.
Under these circumstances, Garuda Indonesia enforces exemption policy for cancellation fee, rebooking/reroute fee, refund fee, administration fee and other ticket change fees for passengers who have scheduled flights to and from Lombok. For its part, Malaysia Airlines ensures that it continues to operate in Bali normally, while some Australian companies also continue ir operations. "So we are very disappointed about that".
Many returned home after the volcano's activity waned, but fresh smoke has sparked a further exodus and around 25,000 people have been evacuated to more than 200 temporary shelters. The last time Mount Agung erupted, in 1963, more than 1000 people died.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
Mount Agung's alert status was raised to the highest in September following a dramatic increase in tremors from the volcano, which doubled the exclusion zone around the crater and prompted more than 140,000 people to leave the area.
