Saad Hariri returns to Lebanon after shock resignation

Lebanon's former PM to meet Egypt's President al-Sisi

Hariri was received by Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades at Larnaca's airport after landing on a private flight from Cairo, where he held talks with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi.

Hariri had been in Paris since Saturday when he met French President Emmanuel Macron.

The Lebanese president has yet to accept Hariri's resignation, who is expected in Beirut on Wednesday for the celebration of National Day.

The former Lebanese prime minister announced his resignation from the Saudi capital Riyadh on November 4, referring the reason to the internal and external armed activities of Hezbollah, a Lebanese Iran-backed Shiite militant group represented by several ministers and affiliates in the government and the parliament. "We want to avoid a proliferation of crises that could get out of control". Saudi Arabia and Hariri say his movements are not restricted.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has criticised the Arab League for supporting Saudi Arabia and its role in the war in Yemen.

His family confirmed in a statement that Young had died and added that he had been suffering from dementia for several years. Young is survived by his wife O'Linda, children Cara and Ross, three grandchildren, a sister and a brother, the band said.

In Lebanon, the army chief called on troops to stand firm against any attempt to incite strife in the country amid the crisis triggered by Hariri's resignation.

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri has returned to Beirut more than two weeks after announcing while in Saudi Arabia that he had resigned his post.

Lebanon maintains a delicate sectarian balance after Sunnis, Shi'ites, Christians and Druze fought a civil war between 1975 and 1990, with factions often backed by regional rivals. The White House said the leaders agreed on the need to work with allies to counter Hezbollah's and Iran's destabilizing activities in the region.

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri has visited the grave of his father, the late Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri. On Thursday, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, speaking alongside his Saudi counterpart, denounced Tehran's "hegemonic temptations".
