Leonardo da Vinci Painting Shatters Auction History with $450.3 Million Sell

Is this $450 Million da Vinci Even a Real da Vinci?

Da Vinci Painting Sold For Only $100 In 1958 Smashes World Record After $450 Million Auction

8 - Silver Car crash (Double disaster), a monumental painting by Andy WARHOL, part in November 2013 for $ 105.4 million at Sotheby's in NY.

Last example, at a private sale in the fall of 2015, a painting by the American painter, Willem De Kooning would have been ceded $ 300 million by Christie's of financier Kenneth Griffin, according to multiple media anglo-saxon.

Auctioneer Jussi Pylkkanen opened bidding at $75 million, pulling in 45 bids from clients on the phone and in the room.

It was purchased at an estate auction in 2005 for $10,000 and then sold privately in 2013 for $80 million.

Christie's is the auction house conducting the sale.

The work was exhibited at The National Gallery in London in 2011, after years of research trying to document its authenticity after it was found, mistaken for a copy, in a USA auction in 2005.

"Salvator Mundi" was attributed to Leonardo after six years of restoration and research, becoming the first discovery of a painting by the Renaissance master since 1909, according to Christie's.

The 26-inch-tall Leonardo painting dates from around 1500 and shows Christ dressed in Renaissance-style robes, his right hand raised in blessing as his left hand holds a crystal sphere.

Christie's senior specialist Alan Wintermute said witnessing the "masterpiece" appear at auction is "as close as I've come to an art world miracle".

One of the first owners painting, created sometime after 1505, was King Charles I of England. Members of the public cared little if at all whether the painting might have been executed in part by studio assistants; whether Leonardo had actually made the work himself; or how much of the canvas had been repainted and restored. Long-known to have existed, and long-sought after, it seemed just a tantalizingly unobtainable dream until now.

Furthermore, he added it's honestly "wonderful" for an "Old Master" to be at the center of attention once again.

"After centuries of hiding, da Vinci's Christ as "Salvator Mundi" stirred unmatched sensation in the art world when it was unveiled on the walls of London's National Gallery in 2011", he said. When a controversial piece of such dubious authenticity is sold at prices no museum can afford, making it available only to the increasingly indistinguishable cliques of oligarchs and their head-of-state business pals, it contributes to a market where expertise and devotion to art are dispensed with; the final word on what's a Leonardo and what isn't goes to the highest bidder, not the most knowledgeable or most dedicated scholar.
