After former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and two others were indicted last week, the sources say Mueller is applying renewed pressure on Flynn. If he is charged, the former National Security Adviser would be the first person who held an administration post to face prosecution.
Prosecutors investigating claims of Russian collusion with the Trump campaign are on the verge of making their next charge, it has been reported. Mr Flynn's possibly indictment would change that. According to NBC, the Justice Department is speaking to witnesses about Flynn's lobbying work, as well as the possibility that he laundered money or lied about his overseas contacts.
They are also investigating whether he attempted to orchestrate the extradition of Fethullah Gulen from the USA to Turkey in exchange for millions of dollars.
Mr Gullen is a rival of Recep Erdogan, the Turkish President.
A former senior law enforcement official said that in the weeks after Trump's inauguration the Federal Bureau of Investigation was asked to conduct a new review of Turkey's 2016 request to extradite Fethullah Gulen, an elderly Muslim cleric living in the USA whom President Erdogan blames for orchestrating a coup to overthrow him. They are also trying to determine if Flynn was behind a request to have the Federal Bureau of Investigation re-review a Turkish extradition request just weeks after Trump took office, and if so, if that request was made in exchange for money from the Turkish government.
The former army general's son, Michael G Flynn, who is a business partner of his father and worked for Mr Trump during the transition period, is also facing possible charges. However, the very next day it was announced that Mueller planned to file the first set of charges in his investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election, in a sign the probe would likely continue well into 2018. Another former Trump campaign aide, George Papadopoulos, has pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
