Former Presidents Bush reveal in new book they didn't vote for Trump
But under Updegrove's analysis of their values and those of past Republican presidents compared to Trump's exhibition of Republicanism, the title still stands. "And I'm not too excited about him being a leader", said George Bush Sr, who was president between 1989 and 1993.
The White House then went on to call George W. Bush's decision to invade Iraq "one of the greatest foreign policy mistakes in American history".
The younger Bush had earlier described Donald Trump's inauguration speech in March as "some weird s**t". George W. left the top of his 2016 ballot blank while George H.W. actually voted for Hillary Clinton.
Bush's son, former President George W. Bush, added that Trump "doesn't know what it means to be president".
"I don't know much about him, but I know he's a blowhard", the elder Bush continued. More than anything though, the Bushes are concerned that Trump is destroying the Republican Party.
"I was totally against the Iraq war", Trump said at a national-security forum at the height of the presidential race.
"This guy doesn't know what it means to be president", the younger man said.
It is rare in the modern political era to see former presidents to openly criticize their successors.
"... If you look at his values and those shared by his father and Ronald Reagan, they are very much in contrast to the values of the Republican Party today, in particular the platform that Donald Trump ran on, which is essentially protectionism and a certain xenophobia", Updegrove told the Times. "Trump represents the outsider, and the Bush family are quintessential insiders", said presidential historian Douglas Brinkley.
In a speech on October 19, W. Bush took aim at bullying from public figures while Trump was embroiled in a feud with a Democratic congresswoman over whether he made an insensitive remark to the grieving wife of a fallen soldier.
This is not the first time that the younger Bush has criticised the USA president.
As the details of the book were made public, the White House obviously didn't stay quiet and reacted strongly to the comments.
And not only did the Bush presidents lament the prospect of a Trump presidency in 2016, Updegrove wrote that they also shunned their party's nominee on Election Day.
