Idaho to get $1.2M in General Motors settlement
ME will receive $1.1 million as part of a multistate, $120 million settlement with General Motors Co. over allegations that the Detroit automaker concealed safety issues related to defects in certain vehicles.
CT served on the multistate investigation's nine-state executive committee.
Individual families have already settled with GM over the ignition switch problem that impacted about 9-million GM cars recalled nationally - and 412,000 cars recalled in Pennsylvania.
The state of MI will receive just under $4.3 million in the settlement which, according to the state's attorney general will go into the state's general fund.
Not represent that certified pre-owned vehicles that General Motors advertises are safe, have been repaired for safety issues, or have been subject to rigorous inspection, unless such vehicles are not subject to any open recalls relating to safety or have been repaired pursuant to such a recall.
In 2014, GM issued seven vehicle recalls in response to unintended ignition related issues, which could move the vehicle out of the "Run" position and into "Accessory" or "Off". The vehicle's safety airbags also might fail to deploy in a collision, increasing the risk of serious injury or death in crashes, according to the release.
Approximately $4.3 million will go into Michigan's general fund, Attorney General Bill Schuette announced Thursday.
The U.S.'s largest auto maker said it had "reached a constructive resolution" with the state attorneys general that, in addition to the payment, "assures GM will continue ongoing improvements made to ensure the safety of its vehicles".
Every state but Arizona sued the Detroit-based automaker, saying it violated consumer protection laws by selling cars even though it knew for at least a decade that the switches were defective. "In this case, our investigation involved allegations of deceptive practices around the safety of their motor vehicles".
Since taking office, Beshear has secured penalties from GM, Volkswagen and Hyundai-Kia, which has yielded more than $4.7 million for the General Fund, the office said. Dealerships must make sure recall repairs are complete before they can sell the vehicle.
The settlement also provides that GM not represent that a vehicle is "safe" unless they have complied with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety standards to the motor vehicle at issue.
