Trump has been diminishing the media since the days of his campaign when he seized on the phrase "fake news".
Conducted from October 12 to 16, the survey indicated that a whopping 46 percent of registered voters "believe the nation's major news organizations fabricate news stories" about Trump and his administration, while 37 percent disagreed. The split is similar on how people think their taxes would change with 31 percent saying they'd "remain about the same".
Republicans overwhelmingly believed that the media invented stories about Trump: 76% believed reporters invented stories, compared to just 11% who believed the media did not fabricate stories about Trump.
According to the poll, 70 percent of Democratic respondents think Trump will be remembered as one of the worst presidents in history, while another 18 percent of Democrats think Trump will be remembered as a below average president.
President Trump regularly accuses much of the US media of fabricating reports about him, and it appears nearly half of Americans believe that to be true.
Trump, who has fought the media since assuming the presidency, seemed to challenge the freedom of the press last week.
In a tweet earlier the same day, Trump was even more direct - this time actually tagging the outlet and including a "NBC=CNN" as an added primary school-style insult. They also claimed he slammed the President as a "moron". I thought after I won, the media would become much more stable and much more honest. "But the media is absolutely dishonest - and frankly, I've never seen anything quite like it". The margin of error is 3 percentage points.
