"Last night (Thursday), we received specific inputs that Gurung was camping on the river bed below Lepcha Bustee along with boys of GJM's militant wing Gorkhaland Personnel, and that there were lot of arms and ammunition there", said Darjeeling's Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Chaturvedi. The police, however, did not comment on this.

The GJM cadres resisted the police advance resulting in violent clashes. "While Malik died of bullet injuries, three other policemen were also injured", Additional Director General of Police, Law and Order, Anuj Sharma told IANS. Weapons used to attack the police were procured from them.

Sharma said, during the clashes, Gurung and his close associates fled to the neighbouring state of Sikkim.

"We will not allow this to happen at any cost, even if we have to make sacrifices", he said.

Early in the morning at 5 am, today, violence once again broke out in the hills of West Bengal, when the Kolkata police raided a forest area near Patlebas in Darjeeling. The police recovered 6 AK 47 and some nine mm pistol and around 500 rounds of cartridges from the spot.

The ADG said a cornered Gurung, who has lost mass support in recent times, was trying to foment trouble in the hills.

"We mourn the death of our fearless heart", senior police officer Anuj Sharma told reporters.

The police are yet to ascertain the cause of fire. The state government should go for tripartite talks to solve the Darjeeling issue.

West Bengal Tourism Minister Gautam Deb, too, told reporters, "The area is Gurung's stronghold".

After cases under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act were filed against him for his alleged involvement in various bomb blasts in Darjeeling and adjoining areas, Gurung has gone into hiding. GJM is an ally of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
