Tillerson 'Moron' Comment Followed Trump's Call for Massive Nuclear Buildup: Report

Trump, long obsessed with nuclear weapons, wants 28000 more

Two-thirds of them say President Donald Trump's war of words with the isolated nation's leader is making the situation worse.

Joe Scarborough on Wednesday called President Trump's comments about the press "unambiguously un-American", after the president suggested a "challenge" to NBC's broadcast license.

Trump's comments, the officials said, came in response to a briefing slide he was shown that charted the steady reduction of US nuclear weapons since the late 1960s. The article said after Trump saw the slide he said he wanted a bigger stockpile of weapons, not the bottom position on the downward-sloping curve.

On Wednesday afternoon, NBC's Peter Alexander reported that on the matter of the First Amendment, Trump said: "It is frankly disgusting the press is able to write whatever it wants to write". USA news reports have painted the relationship between Mr Trump and Mr Tillerson as tense. Officials briefly explained the legal and practical impediments to a nuclear buildup and how the current military posture is stronger than it was at the height of the build-up.

"General Mattis put out a statement, or is putting out a statement, saying that was fake news, that it was just mentioned that way", he said.

It was the second time in a week that NBC had referenced the July meeting.

Trump called the report "pure fiction" on Twitter.

The NBC report stated that some of Trump's key advisers were also in the room during the Pentagon meeting, including the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

The Federal Communications Commission issues broadcasting licenses in the U.S. largely to ensure stations don't trip over each other when transmitting.

Trump's reported desire for a dramatic expansion of America's nuclear arsenal comes at a time of heightening tensions between the United States and North Korea.
