The feud that erupted between President Trump and Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) has confused numerous political veterans in Washington. Bob Corker of having worked with Democrats and the Obama administration to make the Iran nuclear deal happen. "The party needs to sublimate its divisions, get mainstream Republicans to the polls, and persuade the Trump base to cast ballot for non-Trump Republicans", he writes.
Since announcing his retirement, Corker has lashed out at Trump, saying in a New York Timesinterview that the White House is like "an adult day care center" and that Trump could lead the country into World War III.
It's not unusual for Trump to engage in a Twitter attack, but given the high-profile roles in the USA government the two men hold, it's all but unprecedented in recent memory.
"I think I've had four conversations with him about my re-election. he encouraged me to run and said he would do a rally and endorse me", Corker said. "I said "NO" and he dropped out (said he could not win without my endorsement)".
Corker punctuated this by telling the Times that "except for a few people, the vast majority of our caucus" - meaning, of the Senate's 52 Republicans - "understands what we're dealing with here". "We're on the right path right now, believe me".
Corker, who is not seeking re-election in 2018, disputed Trump's version of events. "Didn't have the guts to run!" "I think we are well on our way".
Trump later gave Corker grief about the comment during a meeting in the Oval Office, according to a Republican congressional official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the private conversations.
"If Bob Corker has any honor, any decency, he should resign immediately", Bannon said in an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity on Monday night.
