Canadian police said they were investigating violent attacks in Edmonton on Saturday night as "acts of terrorism" after a man hit a police officer with a auto and stabbed him and then later struck four pedestrians while driving a second vehicle.

Sharif is a Somali refugee who was investigated in 2015 for allegedly espousing extremism but was deemed not to be a threat at the time and an ISIS flag was found in the truck on Saturday night.

At approximately 8:15 p.m. Saturday (0215 GMT Sunday) a man in a speeding white Chevy Malibu crashed through police barricades outside Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium, where a Canadian Football League game was being played.

"A male, believed to be 30 years of age, then jumped out of his vehicle and began viciously stabbing the officer with a knife, as a struggle ensued", the statement added.

The officer managed to fight off the attacker who then fled the area on foot.

Knecht said Chernyk has since been released from hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Knecht said when the U-haul pulled over for the checkpoint, the driver produced identification linking him to the registered owner of the Malibu.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau denounced what he said had been a "terrorist attack" in Edmonton, the capital of Canada's oil-rich Alberta province.

He said the call was made to keep the high-speed pursuit through the downtown, busy with late night bar and night-club goers, because of the threat posed by the suspect.

Conservative Pierre Paul-Hus questioned Mr. Goodale in the House of Commons on Monday, saying "Canadians need to know which information the RCMP had on this individual to undertake the investigation".

"Did we have a clue that this event was going to happen?"

"There will certainly be a review after this to see if we could do things differently, but I do believe what we have in place right now is working quite well". As of Sunday evening, two of the pedestrians remained in hospital in stable condition. Neither the victims nor the suspect has been publicly identified. He said nothing raised any red flags at the time.

But Marlin Degrand, assistant commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, said the suspect was a Somali national seeking refugee status in Canada.
