The airline said flight AF 066 from Paris landed safely at about 8:45 a.m. PST Saturday at Goose Bay Airport in Newfoundland and Labrador.

According to Flight Fleets Analyzer, F-HPJE was delivered to Air France in May 2010 and is equipped with a total of 516 seats.

The double-decker, wide body aircraft was re-routed as it passed over Greenland, landing in Goose Bay at 1542 GMT, the spokesman said.

The Air France jet was reportedly travelling from Paris to Los Angeles when the engine failed.

Passengers were horrified when the engine fell apart following a "loud thud" and "vibration".

Phillies Pitcher Records an Out With His Jersey
Hector Neris recorded his 22nd save for the Phillies despite allowing a solo homer to Curtis Granderson in the ninth. And he's at four, so I definitely know he's trending in the right way. "You can see him feeling for things".

The extent of the damage or what caused it is unclear, but images shared by passengers on social media show that one of the engines appear to have crumbled.

A passenger sharing one of the photos said: "I think the engine has seen better days".

"We had a mid-air mayday when we lost one of our engines".

"The regularly trained pilots and cabin crew handled this serious incident perfectly", Air France officials said in a statement.
